Hint's and Tips

Revision and Exam Tips

  • Don’t always leave revision late, a couple of weeks before the exams isn’t enough since you’re going to have to revise for a few exams, so start revision at least 3-4 months before exams.

  • Try all the revision techniques for example Mind-maps, Flash cards and making notes may be what helped your memory last time but this time your way of learning may change.

  • Make a revision time table and stick to it, include time to relax and watch TV or take a walk.

  • Make sure you bring snacks or water so you don’t have an excuse to leave the room you are revising in and  waste time.

  • Revising late might not work for everyone but if you’re going to stay up late make sure you drink coffee to stay up but  know your limits because if you get really tired, what you have revised may be forgotten.

  • Find a quiet place to study and make sure you are sitting comfortably

  • Dealing with stress before your exams are common so make sure you feel in control by sticking to your revision time-table and making sure you also have time to relax & overall be positive.

Exam tips – For the exam

  • Take a watch so that you can time your answers
  • Check you have the right equipment with you before you leave the house(pens).
  • Take your time and allow yourself enough time to answer all the required questions
  • Arrive to the exam quite early so you know your seat
  • Look through the paper first and mark difficult questions
  • Look at the marks available and read the questions carefully
  • Write as neatly as possible to help the examiner to mark your work. Marking untidy writing is hard
  • Plan longer answers as they are worth more marks
  • Allow yourself a few minutes at the end to read through your answers and correct any mistakes
  • Cross out anything you do not want the examiner to read (e.g. an earlier answer to a question)
  • Check which section you are supposed to be doing in your exam, often students are stressed and do the wrong section because they are nervous, so double check which section you are doing
